Your credit rights in Oklahoma (and under federal law)

Oklahomans have strong, free rights to see, correct, and protect their credit. Here's a plain-language rundown of what federal and state law give you.

The short version

  • Federal law gives you free reports, the right to dispute errors, and the right to freeze your credit at no cost.
  • Oklahoma licenses and bonds credit-services organizations, and gives you a written right to cancel a contract with one.
  • You never have to pay anyone to exercise these rights — they're free to use yourself.
  • A company must give you your rights in writing before you sign anything.

Your credit rights come from two layers of law: federal statutes that apply everywhere, and Oklahoma statutes that add protections for state residents. You don't need to memorize the citations — but knowing what you're entitled to makes you much harder to take advantage of, and it's the reason this whole industry is regulated the way it is.

Your federal rights

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) are the big two:

  • Free reports. You're entitled to your credit reports from each nationwide bureau at no cost through annualcreditreport.com — now weekly.
  • The right to dispute. You can challenge inaccurate or unverifiable items for free, and the bureaus must investigate, generally within about 30 days.
  • A free credit freeze. You can freeze and unfreeze your credit at all three bureaus for free, blocking new creditors from pulling your file.
  • Free fraud alerts. You can place a fraud alert that tells lenders to take extra steps to verify your identity.
  • Accurate reporting. Negative items generally can't be reported longer than seven years (ten for most bankruptcies), and the clock can't be restarted by selling the debt.
  • Protection from credit-repair abuse. Under CROA, a credit-repair company can't charge you before it performs its services, can't make false claims, and must give you a written statement of your rights and a three-day right to cancel.

Your Oklahoma rights

Oklahoma regulates credit-services organizations under the Oklahoma Credit Services Organization Act (24 O.S. §§ 131–148). In plain terms, a company that does credit-repair work for Oklahomans must:

  • Be licensed by the Oklahoma Department of Consumer Credit before doing business.
  • Post a surety bond you can make a claim against if the company violates the law and causes you a loss.
  • Give you a written information statement describing your rights before you sign a contract.
  • Honor your right to cancel the contract in writing within the statutory window, with the cancellation form provided to you.

Two cancellation deadlines, and we honor the later one

Federal law gives you three business days to cancel a credit-repair contract; Oklahoma law provides its own cancellation right too. When the two differ, the honest thing is to honor whichever deadline falls later — which is exactly what our agreement does.

How to use these rights yourself

  1. 1

    See your file

Pull all three reports free from the official site — our walkthrough and lookalike guide makes it painless.

  2. 2

Freeze it if you're not applying for credit

A freeze is the strongest free protection against new-account fraud. Place it at each bureau; lift it temporarily when you need to apply.

  3. 3

    Dispute what's wrong

Found an error? Dispute it directly with the bureau, for free. Keep it specific and factual.

  4. 4

    Know who you're hiring

If you do hire help, confirm they're licensed and bonded, that they don't charge before performing, and that they hand you your rights and cancellation form in writing.

You never have to pay to use your rights

Every right on this page is free to exercise yourself. Anyone who tells you that seeing your report, freezing your credit, or filing a dispute requires paying them is misinforming you.

This page is general information about your rights, not legal advice about your specific situation. For that, talk to a licensed Oklahoma attorney or the Oklahoma Department of Consumer Credit.

You can do this yourself. You have the right to dispute inaccurate information on your credit report yourself, at no cost, directly with the credit bureaus. We do not guarantee any specific result, score increase, or removal of any item. Accurate, current, and verifiable information cannot be removed from a credit report by anyone. This guide is general information, not legal advice about your specific situation.
